BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — The success of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) demonstrates that global progress is not a zero-sum game, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said here Thursday.
Tinubu made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summit of the FOCAC, adding that by working together and looking for win-win solutions, we create opportunities for social development and shared prosperity.
Africa’s partnership with China has been firm and resolute despite global challenges on the economic and geographic fronts, offering a powerful example of what can be achieved through respect for sovereignty and non-interference, Tinubu said.
The bond between Africa and China has grown stronger over the years, and become a true testament to the power of mutual respect and cooperation, he said.
“What began as Chinese support for African nations’ independence has evolved into a rich, multifaceted partnership, spanning trade, investment, and diplomacy,” Tinubu said, adding that the ties have been solidified through high-level engagement, strategic agreement, and a shared vision of growth.
“China has consistently demonstrated its commitment to Africa, not only through financial and developmental support but also through cultural exchanges that bring our people closer and closer together,” Tinubu said.
The establishment of the FOCAC in 2000 is a milestone in the Africa-China relationship, he said, noting this platform has been pivotal in strengthening their economic ties and affirming their commitment to mutual progress.
Highlighting the flourishing economic partnership between the two sides, Tinubu said that trade between Africa and China has grown exponentially, reaching about 280 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. “This impressive figure speaks volumes about the strength of our economic relationship and the expanding integration of our market.”
At the heart of Africa-China relations is a foundation built on trust, mutual respect and the pursuit of common goals, he said. “These values will ensure that the bond between Africa and China continues to deepen and benefits both regions for the generations yet to come.”
He called for further joint efforts of both sides to pool strength and resources, unlock unprecedented levels of growth, and achieve greater heights of Africa-China cooperation in the years ahead. ■
